United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert List with Eleven Countries
The UK authorities has placed 11 more destinations to its travel warning register regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just last month, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to multiple serious events like the deadly demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a poisonous chemical often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
While it is generated during the production of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Authorities' Advice for Tourists
Government representative Hamish Falconer said that every traveler should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"While drinking spirits overseas, choose well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.
"Should anything seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."
The entire register of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
